今回のお話は以前紹介した「五頭龍（ごずりゅう）」に英訳を付けて再構成したものです。
江ノ島 五頭龍と弁財天のお話
Eno-shima,Tale of Gozuryu & Benzaiten
むかし鎌倉の湖に、5つの頭を持つという五頭龍が住んでいました。
Once upon a time there lived a 5 headed dragon in a lake in Kamakura.
龍は鎌倉の深沢、津から腰越にかけて現れては
The dragon often came to the villages of Fukawasa,Tsu and kosigoe in Kamakura.
山を崩し、田畑を荒らし
As he desotryed the lands and rice fileds,
毎年毎年、子どもをさらい
and kidnapped kids,
村人はそれはそれは困っておりました。
The villagers were troubled by the dragon.
そのころ、村の先の海は長らく荒れていました。
At the time, the sea was rough, and black clouds emerged above it.
あるとき、はげしい雷とともに波間から江ノ島が現れました。
Suddenly an island presently called “Eno-shima” emerged from the sea in a series of lightning.
天空から童を従えた弁財天が島に降りました。
Then a beautiful goddess “Benzaiten” appeared from the sky and descended to the island in golden light stream. Two girls followed her.
一目見て、五頭龍は恋に落ち「結婚してください」と伝えます。
Being infatuated by her, the Dragon immediately proposed marriage.
弁財天は「悪さばかりでは結婚できませんよ」と諭しました。
The Goddess, however, turned down the proposal as she knew his bad intentions.
龍は行いを改めることを約束し、めでたく夫婦になりました。
The startled Dragon gave her a sincere commitment that he would change. The Goddess accepted it and married him.
以来、龍は日照りに雨を降らせ、台風を防ぎ、
Since then the Dragon called rainfall in a drought, stopped Typhoon.
龍に守られ、人々は安心して暮らしました。
The villagers lived at ease with the dragon.
やがて龍は歳をとると江ノ島を見つめて山となり、
いまでもこの地を見守っていると伝わっています。
As the days and years went by, the aged Dragon become a mountain, and has been protecting Eno-shima.
